5 Budget Wedding Tips - Chicago Edition

So, you want to plan a wedding in the Windy City—but don’t want to pay an arm and a leg? You’ve come to the right place! Chicago may have a reputation for being an expensive wedding destination, but with some creativity and smart choices, you can plan a beautiful celebration for your loved ones without draining your budget.

It’s post-COVID, and gatherings are back in full swing, but with prices still high and options looking different, it can be tricky. However, with some key decisions, I was able to help the brides plan their wedding in Chicago, making their day beautiful and budget-friendly.

  1. A Scenic Outdoor Venue (for Less!)

Chicago has an amazing variety of parks to choose from—there are actually 614 parks managed by the Chicago Park District, and many offer beautiful, scenic spots perfect for an intimate wedding. The brides chose to get married at the Chicago Women’s Park and Gardens, which was not only picturesque but also fitting, as it was a wedding between two women.

Getting a permit through the park district was simple and affordable, allowing them to reserve the perfect location at a fraction of what traditional venues charge. Hosting the wedding in late October allowed them to avoid the busy wedding season and score a great time slot. Yes, it was a little chillier than usual, but the quiet and peaceful vibe of an off-season park wedding made it worth it.

  1. Simple, Stunning Florals

Florals from Field & Florist

Since the ceremony was outdoors in a garden, decorative flowers weren’t necessary. The natural beauty of the park did most of the work, saving the couple a significant chunk of change. The brides each carried stunning bouquets from Field & Florist, which cost only $100 per bouquet. The result was simple but beautiful, and it kept the budget in check.

  1. Skipping the Formal Reception

Instead of opting for a formal reception, the couple made a reservation at a local restaurant for an intimate dinner with their closest friends and family. Summer House allowed them to choose a menu and pay for all of the attending guests for a personal touch and a thank you to those who attended. After dinner, they went bar-hopping around the city with their guests—a fun and relaxed way to keep the celebration going. With fewer than 20 guests at the wedding, the couple was able to keep the day personal and cost-effective, while inviting friends who couldn’t attend the ceremony to join the after-party.

  1. Splurging Where It Counts: Photography

The brides decided to splurge a little on photography—and it was worth it. They hired Arielle Gallione Photography, whose associate photographer captured stunning images of their special day. While this was their biggest expense, it was a smart investment for lasting memories, and the price was still reasonable for the quality they received.

  1. Officiating the Wedding Myself: Saving Money and Making It Personal

One surprising expense for many couples is the cost of hiring an officiant. To help them save, I decided to get certified to officiate the wedding myself. Not only did this cut out a major cost, but it also made the ceremony incredibly personal. As their sister and wedding planner, it was an honor to guide them through every step—from planning to officiating—and it’s a memory I’ll always cherish.

Your Dream Day, Your Way

Planning a wedding in Chicago doesn’t have to come with a sky-high price tag. By thinking creatively, choosing the right season, and skipping unnecessary expenses, you can create a beautiful celebration that reflects the couple’s personality without going over budget. Whether it’s a garden ceremony, a cozy dinner, or a night out with friends, what matters most is creating a day that’s meaningful and filled with love.
