Fall Fun at Walden Pumpkin Farm: A Toddler-Friendly Guide to Pumpkins, Play, and Farm Adventures
With October in full swing, we ventured out to Walden Pumpkin Farm, a beloved seasonal spot in Middle Tennessee, for a day of pumpkins, photo ops, and fall fun. If you’re looking for somewhere to celebrate autumn with kids in tow, read on for what to expect—including a few tips that’ll make your trip a little smoother (spoiler: consider going in November).
Getting In
Admission to the “fun zone” was $12 for adults and kids over 4, with children under 4 (like my daughter) getting in free. The day started off cool, making it a perfect time for photos and exploring, but quickly heated up—fall vibes with a touch of summer flashbacks!
Activities at Walden Pumpkin Farm
Walden Pumpkin Farm has something for everyone, no matter your age or preferred level of activity. The website (waldenpumpkinfarm.com) details their seasonal offerings, but here’s what we enjoyed:
Hay Maze
The hay maze was a highlight! Though most of the kids speeding through were older, my 14-month-old gave it her best try. Every time she tottered into a turn or paused to figure it out, the other kids were adorably patient, giving her space and cheering her on as she “navigated” the course.
Petting Zoo
We got up close with the farm animals, where little ones can feed and pet friendly goats and other critters. It was all gentle enough for toddlers to enjoy, and a great way to introduce the little ones to animals. Olive LOVED the pigs—but one got really close when she wasn't looking and scared her right back to me.
Kid-Friendly Play Area
They’ve created a mini “corn crib” play area just for small children, perfect for crawlers and early walkers like mine. There’s also a pumpkin train made for the littlest ones, and the gentle speed was great for toddler-friendly thrills.
Hayride (What We Missed)
The farm has a classic hayride looping around the property, which we hoped to try but ultimately passed on since the line was long, and the day had become pretty warm. Maybe a November goal!
Pumpkins Galore and Photo Ops
You can’t leave without pumpkins, of course. Walden has a big selection for picking out your perfect pumpkin for carving or décor. And photo ops? Everywhere you turn, there’s another ideal spot for snapping family shots—cornstalks, rustic fences, pumpkin stacks. Even with my little one wriggling around, we got a few keepers.
Café & Farm Treats
Walden also has a small shop filled with treats, including caramel apples and seasonal baked goods, which we couldn’t resist! There’s also a café on site, but the line was packed. If you’re planning to eat there, be ready for a bit of a wait or, better yet, pack a picnic to enjoy at their shaded picnic tables.
Tips for a Smooth Visit
Go in November
October crowds can be intense, and the weather still borders on summer! November has cooler temps, smaller crowds, and plenty of fall feels.
Bring Sunscreen and Water
The day started crisp, but by noon it was so hot I regretted my choice of fall fashion - even the layers were too much! We found ourselves craving water and shade, so definitely come prepared.
Don’t Overpack Activities
While there are plenty of attractions for all ages, pick a couple that seem toddler-friendly and just take it slow. With the sun and excitement, my daughter was worn out by afternoon and conked out the whole way home.
Final Thoughts
Walden Pumpkin Farm is a fantastic day out for families, whether you’re coming for pumpkins, play, or that fresh autumn air. It’s definitely geared toward mobile toddlers and up, but even with a 14-month-old, we found plenty to do at a relaxed pace. Plan your day, prep for some lines, and enjoy the many sights, smells, and sounds of fall on the farm. And, if nothing else, enjoy watching the kiddos experience their own little adventures!
